Parking Sign Observance Urged Editor, The Palladium-Item: The common practice of parkIng in front of the stores in the shopping centers shows complete disregard for the "No Parking, Fire Hazard" signs posted there. Not only would these vehicles hamper fire equipment and personnel, but their presence in these areas forces pedestrians to step from between parked cars directly into traffic. One often hears, "Young people haven't the proper respect for authority." Unfortunately, they often only Imitate their elders.

Let's take steps to set a better example before we reap the consequences of bodily injury or even death. Robert N. Chapman, R. R. 2, Brookville, Ind.

Contributions Of Thomas Defended Editor, The Palladium-Item: Your editorial "Socialist Approach Still Wrong" of Dec. was so narrow in 1 concept that you could not debate the positive or negative aspects of Norman Thomas' philosophy, but used his death to assail those political parties with which you disagree. You imply that Social Security, minimum wage desegregation laws are "unpopular." I ask you, with whom are these laws unpopular? I would venture to say it would not be those elderly people to whom a Social Security check is their only means of support nor would it be a worker making a bare existence at the minimum wage. Finally, it would certainly not be the black people of the South who were denied access to state universities that their tax money helped support. I would agree that these laws are inadequate, only because the original versions were watered down by the conservative element in Congress to such a degree that they would be ineffective in later years.

Fortunately the humanitarian philosophies of Norman Thomas and Eugene V. Debs and the reforms they were able to bring about for those who, otherwise, would have been unprotected, will not be erased by your editorials that equates such work with an anti-American doctrine. When was it ever "anti-American" to show compassion for those who may not be as fortunate as yourself? James E. Mulroony, 120 West Main Centerville. Editor's Note: We are opposed to the socialist philosophy and believe that compassion expressed through the democratic methods for reform in our free enterprise system is an especially American attribute.
