However, the Bears found themselves hard pressed before finally Bob Purkey made the Philadelphia Phillies his sixteenth victim of the season as the Cincinnati Redlegs pounded out a 10-2 win Saturday afternoon. The Pittsburgh Pirates trimmed the Milwaukee Braves' National League lead to seven and one-half games by winning, 7-6, while Chicago topped San Francisco, 6-3, and St.

Powers' shot Saturday was only his second of the year. CHICAGO AP) Rookie John-ny Briggs and reliever Don El-ston set down the hard-hitting San Francisco Giants on two hits Saturday and hurled the Chicago Cubs to a 6-3 victory. Briggs had a no-hitter through the first six innings but his bid for fame ended in the seventh when Orlando Cepeda led off with a single.

The Cubs kayoed Giant starter Johnny Antonelii in the second inning with a four-run uprising that featured a two-run triple by Tony Tavlor. 3 cr? A two-out single by Ted Kazanski followed Anderson's homer, and then the Redleg righthander set down 15 men in a row before Chico Fernandez singled with two out in the ninth. Fernandez, who declared before the game that he wanted to play or be traded, was not in the starting line-up but came in during the eighth inning when Willie Jones was thumbed out for protesting a call at third base on a double steal by Pete Whisenant and Robinson. Simmons Hurts Arm Curt Simmons, who started for the Phils, retired in the third with a severe pain in his left elbow as the Redlegs built up a 2-0 lead. Jack Sanford replaced Simmons and gave up three runs in the one inning he worked before he was re- ST.

LOUIS AP An ailing I Stan Musial came off the bench to spark an eighth inning rally with a pinch double Saturday night and Joe Cunningham's two-run homer in that inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Extra base hits accounted for all the scoring in the game. Dodger right-hander Don Drys-dale was sailing along to his seventh straight victory behind a two-run lead from home runs bv Carl Furillo in the second and Gino Cimoli in the eighth inning. Robinson hit his twenty-eighth homer in the fifth off rookie John Anderson and Dropo followed with his sixth. The Redlegs scored three unearned runs in the eighth on two crrofs oms and a bases-loaded single by Dropo. The loss was the Phils' fifth in a row and their twenty-third in their last 30 games.

PITTSBURGH fAP Johnny Powers' pinch home run in the eighth inning earned the Pittsburgh Pirates their second straight victory over the Milwaukee Braves 7-6 Saturday. Bob Friend, shooting for his 20th victory, and Bob Buhl, looking for his sixth, were shelled from the mound in the fifth inning when both teams counted three runs. Johnny Logan and Eddie Mathews got back-to-back homers in the fifth, giving the Braves a temporary 5-3 lead. Del Rice's homer knotted the score at 6-6 in the eighth.

Clothiers" upwards from 2 ft Ms for That New FALL OUTFIT Good Looking FALL SUITS! the great over-all speed a good team needs. Be that as it may, the Irish who don't play either Oklahoma or Michigan State this fall seem destined to cut a wide swathe in their 10-game schedule. Brennan's 25 returning letter-men include a couple of nimble-footed junior halfbacks, Pat Doyle and Jim Crotty, who didn't play too much as sophomores but came along fast. Figure To Start They figure to be starters this fall in what should be a fine back-field, also including quarterback Bob Williams and fullback Nick Pietrosante. Doyle, who could beat graduated Aubrey Lewis, a track star, for 50 yards, and a 185-pound sophomore halfback, Ray Ratkowski, are the swiftest on the Irish squad which began drills this week.

"I don't see how everybody is rating us so high," said Brenann, starting his fifth season and seeking to improve upon a surprising 7-3 record last year. "Four of our games last fall easily could have gone the other way, and we could have been struck with a 3-7 record." In one of the most stunning upsets in many a season, the 1957 Irish snapped Oklahoma's 47-game unbeaten string, 7-0. Last fall's Irish defeats were by Navy (20-6), Michigan State (34-6) and Iowa (21-13). "Navy is one of the country's most under-rated teams and we play the Middies again along with another fine Iowa club," said Brennan. "Purdue will have one of its best clubs too.

Our team has a lot of work to do. We need an awful lot of improvement on defense." Other 1958 Irish opponents are Indiana (in the Sept. 27 opener), Southern Methodist, Duke, Pittsburgh, North Carolina and Southern California. Line Not Quick Although seasoned. Notre Dame's line lacks the quickness Brennan desires.

He spent most of spring practice on offense trying to get faster starts from the line. Depth is lacking at center and guards, although the starters will be corking good performers, including Al Ecuyer and Jim Schaff at guards and 225-pound Bob Scholtz at center. Notre Dame has quantity and tackles with seniors Bronko Nag-urski, son of the former Minnesota grid great; Chuck Puntillo, Don Lawrence and Frank Geremia still trying to prove who is best. The end department shapes up as quite good, including seniors Dick Royer, Gary Myers, Bob Wetoska and Jim Colosimo, and junior Monty Stickles. Pietrosante, still well over his 1957 playing weight of 215 pounds, should be one of the country's best college fullbacks.

He has a seasoned replacement in Ron Toth, while sophomore Dan Griffith shows promise at the position. Quarterback looms the best fortified position. Backing senior Williams are two juniors, George Izo, an excellent long passer, and Don White, rated the most improved quarterback in spring practice. If any soph catches fire, it may be Bill Mack, a fine halfback prospect. in defeating Boston although getting but seven hits.

The power came from the bat of Don Mosier who belted three hits in five trips to the plate, including a home run. Earl Foster and Dick Bathis hit extra-base blows for Boston with Foster getting a triple and Bathis a double. In non-league action, Centerville stopped Greensfork with the bases loaded in the last inning and but one run needed to tie. Stops Centerville Don Clark took over in the fifth for Greensfork and stopped the Bulldogs cold with one hit the' remainder of the way. At the time, Centerville led, 12 to 6.

But the Demons kept slashing away to narrow the margin to 12-8 in the top of the seventh. Five walks and a double by Clark pushed over three runs but the threat fell short as the final Demon batter struck out. Doubles were hit by Charles Bane, Clark and Henley of Greensfork and Fred Tressler of Centerville. Fred Harvey also tripled for the winners. Conference matches has Economy at Greensfork, Fountain City at Whitewater and Webster at Williamsburg on Monday. Boston plays at Centerville in a non-league contest. On Thursday, Greensfork goes to Boston, Webster is at Fountain City and Williamsburg at Milton. Centerville plays at Economy in an exhibition game. A break on a ground single by Larry Moore gave Whitewater two runs in the first inning. With a man on base, Moore belted a sharp hit to right field. It hit a rut and bounded high over the head of Sharpshooter outfield Stanley Jenkins. By the time the ball could be recovered, Moore had followed Chuck Kenworthy home for two runs. He was credited with a home run since Jenkins did not touch the ball.

Milton got one back in the bottom of the inning but Whitewater upped it to 7-1 with two In the third and fourth and a solo run in the fifth. Pulled Close The Sharpshooters pushed over three in the bottom of the fifth and one in the seventh to pull within two runs. And the game ended with Milton having the bases loaded as Gale Roberts got Jerry Bohlander on a third strike. Philip Piatt belted a double for the winners while Bob Kirlin got one for the Sharpshooters. David Barnes started for Fountain City but failed to get a man out as Larry Bowmer doubled and the next three batters received free passes.

David Busby came on to get the first out on a strikeout but walked two in a row before getting out of the inning with four runs being scored. The margin was all the Yellow Jackets needed for the win although Fountain City collected one more hit than the winners. Nate Edmonds joined Bowmer with a double for Williamsburg and teammate Jack Frazier belted a triple. All five Fountain City hits were singles. Elliott Plans 6-Month Rest OSLO, Norway (UPI) Australian Herb Elliott wound up the most amazing campaign in track history Saturday by announcing he is "too tired" to race any more for the next six months. In his farewell appearance for the year, the Aussie marvel ran the second fastest "metric mile" in history here Friday, covering the 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 57.4 seconds 710 of a second under the listed world mark. Elliott's time is topped only by his 3:36.0 clocking at Goteborg, Sweden, Aug.

28, which is awaiting record approval. "That was my last, race for six months," Elliott said after Friday's 10-yard victory over Murray Halberg of New Zealand. "Twelve wild horses couldn't me run. I just want to relax." All told during 1958 he eclipsed four minutes for the mile every time he ran the distance, a total of 10 times, including his world's fastest mile of 3:54.5 at Dublin on Aug. 6.

Of the 10 fastest miles in history, he has run five. And, now, he also has run the two fastest "metric miles." Now Only Model C-6 EASIEST TERMS IN TOWN!
